Dear Internet, I need your help. Oh, and Books and Ghosts!
October 31st, 2006
First I need those who are fans of the Mac, Macintosh lovers, Members of the Church of Latter Day Mac Users, or whatever you call yourself these days, For those who are not in the Steve Jobs Fan Club, you can skip down to the second half, which I have placed in bold for your viewing pleasure.
I want to buy a Mac AND I would like to buy a decent one without paying through the nose. Because here is the problem that I have, I picked up my current laptop for about $850 (that’s shipped) and it’s loaded nicely (15.4 WSXGA wide screen, ATI x1400, GB of RAM), however to get a Mac with a 13″ screen, slower video card, no built in modem, and smaller battery, I have to pay about $300 more.
But I know what you are going to say…”It’s a Mac, and MacOSX is much better then Windows!”
And that very well may be true, however I want a smaller laptop that I can take when on vacation backup photos on my camera, check email, and do a wee bit web browsing if needed. Since I already have a a couple of Windows laptops, I thought I would get a Mac instead. So my question to you wondrous Internet is, Does Apple ever run sales on their hardware? Any sites out there that might sell refurbished hardware at reduced prices? Anything at all to help a brother out??
Books!
Finished reading “Catcher in the Rye” over the weekend right before I went out and picked up “The Grapes of Wrath”. For some unknown freaking reason, Amazon again delayed the order, and let me know that I would receive my book in early January. Not. A. Chance. Amazon.
Catcher is so much different now, I think due to the fact that I was an angsty teenager the last time I read it. This time, being the old mean bastard that I am now, it seemed like so much whining. While I did enjoy reading the book again, it just wasn’t the same as before. I think at this point maybe there should be a cut off age to read it, well before 30 or the ownership of a Fidelity account. It seems funny that Holden was so bitter and angry about all the “phonies” in the world, and he doesn’t even know the half of it. He doesn’t know anything about “Corporate America”. I have placed it on the shelf in our study and I honestly think the next time the spine will be cracked is when my children become angsty.
Ghosts!
While I didn’t attend any cool Halloween parties this year, nor did I dress up, I would like to offer one bit of advice. When approaching a home with a silhouette of a Doberman Pincher in the front door, don’t be afraid, Dobermans are very friendly animals and the only reason he wants you, is that fact that he loves Candy Corn. We have already had one batch of children miss out on Snickers and M&M’s!

The brick and morter Apple stores sometimes have “refreshed” machines - that is, open box customer returns. And with the new lineup just out there might be some older models for cheap. Apple has refurb stuff on their website. Also, check http://www.smalldog.com/ - they often have used/refurb stuff. I dunno what their warranties are like. Careful about eBay - I’ve had friends buy computers off eBay and it was all kinds of bad.

I never understood why Macs cost so much more either. But I happened to need a new computer a few months ago when Apple released their new customized G5’s and pulled the slightly older model G5’s out of the stores. I called the nearest Apple Store to see if there was anyway they could get me a floor model for cheap. It was souped up, they had put 2 extra gigs of RAM in it and they couldn’t charge me for it because “it had already been expensed.” I am still sort of giggling about it, I ended up getting a pimpy (highly scientific terminology) computer for $2000.

Supply and demand. Mac is a smaller percentage of the market. Higher levels of production lowers prices. Lower levels of production increases prices.
Why are IPods expensive, with a sizable market share? Well…that’s more difficult to explain. I think it’s Apple saying, ‘they’re OK paying higher prices over here, so we’ll see what the market will bear over there, and perhaps make a nice profit.” But that’s just a guess.
